How to Control Portions at Restaurants

Even when you’re not in your kitchen you want to be empowered to make healthier choices. The FDA is about to make this feat much easier. Part of the new healthcare law will require chain restaurants with more than 20 locations to prominently display their calorie counts on menus. Sit-down restaurants remain some of the hardest places to control calories. As if the lack of nutritional information available online wasn't enough, the variability of ingredients used, unregulated cooking methods, and ever-changing menu items could send your calorie count totals through the roof.

Avoid Ample Appetizer Calories

The starter items on many restaurant menus are appetizing, but they may not be the best way to start a healthy meal. In fact, you may be hard-pressed to find an appetizer that isn't fried or full of empty calories. So says a report by the RAND corporation published in Public Health Nutrition that found appetizers had more calories, fat, and sodium than all other types of food on the menu. As you await your entree, ask for foods that will ease your hunger. A study published in the journal Appetite found eating soup prior to a meal can lower caloric intake by 20%.

Downsize Your Meal

If you can attribute some of your pounds to the Super-Size craze, you can get some much-needed revenge by downsizing your meal. If you were around in the 1950's, a restaurant-size meal is now four times larger than it once was according to the RAND study. Fight the portion distortion by getting a meal that's the right portion size for you. If the advice to take home half your meal is a no go, there are other ways to lose unwanted calories. A trial by Harvard Business School professor Jason Riis, Ph.D shows consumers will save calories if given the option.

How Your Choices Affect Your Quality of Life

“The Awakening of Consciousness is the Next Evolutionary Step for Mankind” ~Eckhart Tolle

The human consciousness is becoming more and more aware that everything in the current political, social, economical and food system is rigged, manipulated and designed for distraction and suppressing your humanity and true desire to simply love and be loved.

The financial system has been at the near point of collapse once every 10 years, in a cycle of boom and bust, when everything you've worked hard for can vanish in a blink of an eye.

The “healthcare” system has become “sick-care“ system, controlled by powerful insurance corporations and lobbyists with their entire focus on making money rather than healing.

The food system is manipulated and toxic foods are regulated safe by the big corporation who spend millions of dollars to bribe politicians and the government officials. And genetically modified foods, toxic additives, preservatives, foods with high levels of chemicals and pesticides, MSG, high fructose corn syrup and many other carcinogens are added to your food without proper labeling and proper scientific assessment for their safety.

So how can someone not be a part of the current system ?

First of all “you are what you eat”. You can stop being a part of the big corporation’s games by changing your diet. Avoid genetically engineered foods, foods that have high levels of pesticides and chemicals and foods that have toxic additives and preservatives. Instead shop in a local grocery store or a local farm and boycott the big corporations and their toxic foods. That way you don’t need sick-care or drugs that make you even sicker.
Instead of watching a life on TV, live a real life in nature and have fun outdoor activities. Don’t rely on the propaganda of the cable news and do your own research to find independent resources of the news.
Unlike what the society tries to convince you, your success and the value of your work isn't measured by how much money you make, but the difference you make in people’s lives.

BREAKFAST LIKE A KING, LUNCH LIKE A PRINCE, DINE LIKE A PAUPER

This ancient proverb has more than a grain of truth in it, but sadly, most people leading today’s busy lives skip breakfast altogether. This is really bad news as ideally you should be getting 25 percent of your day’s calories from breakfast, enough to keep you going right through till lunchtime, both physically and mentally. Starting the day without refueling your body’s engine means poor concentration, irritability, low blood sugar and a dreadful craving for the biscuit tin or chocolate bar in the middle of the morning.

Five million people don’t bother to eat breakfast at home but grab a snack while dashing to work. They consume one and a half million bacon sandwiches, over a million packets of crisps, and three-quarters of a million ham sandwiches and more than a million sugary soft drinks. But worse still, half the working population skip breakfast altogether and another half a million grab a bag of sweets or bar of chocolate on their way.

Breakfast is exactly what it says, breaking your fast, and for most people the time they spend in bed is the longest period they go without food. When you get up in the morning it may easily be 8 – 12 hours since you last ate and your blood sugar level is at rock bottom. In order for your brain to function properly it needs a constant supply of sugar which is why starting your day with breakfast is so important. Skipping breakfast means poorer performance by schoolchildren, a greater risk of accidents when driving, and a lack of
efficiency and concentration at work.

And just to prove the point, a study published last year showed that people who ate breakfast were definitely happier than those who didn't.

Spice Girls: The making of East Indian bottle masala

We take you through the making of the legendary and top-secret East Indian bottle masala.

Just before the monsoons, Mumbai's Machados, Pereiras and Ferreiras, all residents of East Indian gaothans (villages), convert their terraces and courtyards into a hotbed of red chillies to grind the famous East Indian bottle masala.
Our introduction to this ambrosial reddish-orange powder, which can unleash a punch into any dish — from Bombay duck curry to bhendi fry — was on a hot afternoon a decade ago. The sweltering heat had melted the edges of a newly-tarred lane in Bandra; school kids mocked a crooning koel as they twirled twigs in the melted asphalt to make black lollies. Suddenly, their chatter and the smell of tar were replaced by rhythmic thudding, and the aroma of roasted spices.
Amboli, Andheri, Malad or Vasai in summer, and chances are that you'll witness the desi spice girl show. The mavshis are professional pounders, booked months in advance to make the masala out of whole spices, and seal it in dark glass bottles to use all through the year. The dark bottle helps protect the masala from sunlight, and its tiny mouth makes it the perfect sprinkler.
Like with the Nunes, it's usually the family matriarch who bequeaths the recipe to the next generation. The precise quantity of the 25 or 35 spices used (dry red chillies, coriander, cumin, triphala, til, zaiphal, cloves, kebabchini, badi/chhoti elaichi and lichen among others), and the sequence in which they are mixed, is a heavilyguarded secret.

Are you eating for life or death?

Everything you purchase, whether it is to eat, drink, or put on your skin, is a choice you make which either supports life or supports death. What are you buying next? Are you buying aspartame, bleached foods and fluoridated water? Are you buying medicine that was made in a lab that makes you sicker, or are you buying organic food, nature's food, and herbs and natural remedies? Do you know about Superfoods, or are you not even aware of that choice? It's time to double think every choice, to plan ahead and make informed, educated choices. Are you buying organic seeds? Are you growing your food in organic soil? Are you watering that soil with non-fluoridated, non-chlorinated, non-medicated water? In fact, are you buying spring water to drink, not bottled tap water?

Are you buying synthetic gum, formaldehyde candy, and insecticide corn sugar, or are you buying healthy food that fuels life, that fuels sustainable life? Are you sustaining planet Earth? Ask yourself right now, because YOU make the decisions, not the TV or the radio, not the ads in the magazines, or the stores or the politicians. You make the decisions, every moment. Every thing you buy either supports pollution or supports the environment. You choose. You make the choice. Use your brain and forethought to plan, to research, to live organic.

Would you try the world's hottest curry?

Dish so fiery chefs have to wear GAS MASKS to make it

A restaurant in New York is serving up a curry so fiercely hot chefs have to wear gas masks to prepare it.
Touted the 'world's spiciest curry' the Phaal contains eight of the chillies in the world including the Bhut Naga Jolokia, which is used to make tear gas by the Indian Military.
The curry which is being served to diners is 200 times hotter than chili sauce.
The fiery feast has left diners sweating, crying, shaking and vomiting. Some have even hallucinated while attempting the eye-watering meal while others have collapsed and been taken to hospital by ambulance.
Every customer who manages to clear their plate is awarded a free beer, certificate and place in the restaurant's Phaal of Fame.

So when are you going to have that ?
